Montero seemed fine with the kennel though it was hard to tell since he displayed little response. He had come out of the carrier on his own accord, which was a positive sign, but then totally ignored the litter box, the water cup, and the three bowls of food. Army-crawling into the jumbo-sized bed, he’d crouched for a moment, gazing out the window. Then he sank into a loaf with a big kitty sigh and pointedly shut his eyes.

I finally got a good look at the boy. He was a large cat, or had been before he lost way too much weight. Though his body was an even taupe color, his ringed tail marked him as a dilute orange tabby. Sure enough, on his right hind end, where a back leg should have been, there was only a poof of long, oatmeal-colored fur. The NHS medical assistants had done their best to clean him up, but much of his coat still hung in mats and dreadlocks. I guess they decided the shock of a buzz cut would be too much for the already-distressed cat. We could work on that in a few days once he had a chance to relax.

Turning off the overhead light so the only illumination was the natural glow from outside, I gave him a quiet reassurance that all was well and left the room, closing the door behind me. Cats are amazingly resilient, probably because it’s their nature to live in the moment. I hoped that a good nap in a safe, dry environment would restore at least some of the big boy’s feline spirit.

“In here,” Frannie called from the kitchen. Being the best friend she was, she had made tea while I finished tucking in Montero. It was Earl Grey, and the perfumed bouquet was exactly what I needed.

I checked on Kitty in her new room. She was curled into a perfect gray ball on the velvet patchwork comforter, and I resisted bothering her with my purely personal urge to pet her soft fur. As I joined Frannie in the kitchen, she was already bringing the tea things to the table. I sank into a chair with a grateful sigh. She sat down across from me and proceeded to pour.

“Now that the cats are set, fed, and watered,” she said decisively, “are you going to tell me what that was all about?”

I took a welcome sip. “What what was all about?”

“The Skype. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but I couldn’t help but overhear. That woman sounded like she was arranging some sort of raid and asking you to help. Lynley, you haven’t signed on as an animal rights terrorist while I wasn’t looking, have you?”

“Certainly not.
